Blood Lab Tests

Blood Lab Tests
VSA/HFA offers several blood tests, which are done using venous blood drawn from either arm. One or two small tubes are filled with blood and the samples are sent to the lab for processing. The results are sent directly to the participants within 10-14 days. The participants can choose to have the results sent to their primary healthcare providers.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The Complete Blood Count (CBC) and differential count are a series of tests that provide a tremendous amount of information about an individual’s blood cells. The measurements included are:
  • Red blood cell count (RBC),
  • Hemoglobin (Hgb),
  • Hematocrit (Hct),
  • Red blood cell indices,
  • White blood cell count (WBC), and
  • Differential count (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), blood smear information and platelet count.

Thyroid Panel
This test evaluates the basic function of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is involved in the production and release of multiple hormones. Abnormal levels of these hormones can be indicative of a variety of disorders.

Homocysteine
Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with heart disease. An individual’s proneness to it is often genetic. It can be fatal, but research has shown that it can be easily treated with vitamins.

C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
CRP is a component of the immune system used to fight infection and is therefore a marker of inflammation. A study published in the November 14, 2002 New England Journal of Medicine suggests that CRP is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular disease risk than LDL/bad cholesterol. This test is available via venipuncture or an onsite screening system.

The regular blood test package that VSA offers includes cholesterol testing with a full lipid profile, a chemistry panel, and a CBC with differential.

If you would like your company's employees to take advantage of our complementary follow-up counseling, request our Follow-up Counseling Instructions.pdf. This handout describes how we provide Follow-up Counseling service via telephone or email for up to two weeks after the screening.
